Role Overview

The Trail Maintenance Lead will support a small crew focused on maintaining and enhancing mountain bike-specific trails within the qathet region, including the Mount Mahony and Duck Lake networks.

Working with the qathet Regional Cycling Association (QRCA), this role emphasizes trail sustainability and feature maintenance, while leading crew members in safe, sustainable mountain bike trail-building practices.

This is an ideal role for someone looking to build leadership experience in trail stewardship, trail construction, outdoor recreation, environmental management, or natural resource fields. Youth studying natural resource management, engineering, GIS, forestry, parks management, or related disciplines within the qathet region will be prioritized, to support rural labour force development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily maintenance of mountain bike trails, including flow trails, technical descents, and climb trails
  • Mentor Trail Crew Members in bike-specific trail work
  • Inspect and maintain trail features (berms, rollers, bridges, rock armouring, technical features and signage)
  • Identify and prioritize maintenance to improve ride quality, drainage, and safety
  • Rake and rebuild trail tread to maintain proper grade, flow, and durability
  • Oversee drainage systems to prevent erosion and protect trail sustainability
  • Coordinate installation and upkeep of trail signage and wayfinding systems
  • Lead volunteer dig days focused on mountain bike trail improvements
  • Conduct safety briefings and ensure proper use of tools and PPE
  • Track completed work and report progress to the QRCA Board of Directors 
  • Familiar with a shows a good understanding of the RSTBC Trail rating standards and ensuring maintenance is complete to that level 
  • Coordinates weekly trail maintenance plan
  • Lead safety and reporting – daily trail logs and safety check ins
  • Lead trail inspections and inventory – identifying issues and completing online forms for submission to RSTBC
  • Support in QRCA events over the summer months

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Comfortable working in remote, forested environments
  • Physically capable of demanding trail work in steep terrain
  • Strong safety awareness and decision-making skills
  • Must have a valid First Aid Certification (or able to obtain as facilitated)

Assets

  • Experience with mountain bike trail building or maintenance
  • Familiarity with IMBA or sustainable trail-building standards, RSTBC Trail rating standards
  • Experience shaping berms, jumps, or technical trail features
  • Familiarity with Work Safe BC protocols and / or volunteer coordination is beneficial, but training will be provided
  • Valid Drivers License 
  • Familiarity with the local trail networks and access roads
  • Experience with radio usage
  • Passion for mountain biking and trail stewardship
  • Knowledge of google forms, google drive and google docs for reporting purposes

Trail Maintenance Crew Member

Role Overview

Trail Crew Members will work as part of a team maintaining and improving mountain bike trails across the qathet region.

Under the direction of the Trail Maintenance Lead, crew members will focus on trail flow, durability, and feature maintenance using sustainable trail-building techniques that enhance rider experience while protecting the environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance on mountain bike trails, including:
    • Berm reshaping and tread repair
    • Clearing and maintaining drainage
    • Corridor brushing and sightline improvements
  • Rake and rebuild trail surfaces to maintain flow and ride quality
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of trail features (rollers, bridges, rock work, technical features)
  • Improve drainage to reduce erosion and trail damage
  • Help install and maintain trail signage 
  • Identify hazards such as braking bumps, erosion, or unsafe features
  • Support volunteer trail days and community dig sessions
  • Follow all safety procedures and proper tool use
  • Support in QRCA events

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Physical fitness for hiking, digging, and working in steep terrain
  • Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented
  • Comfortable working in forested trail environments

Assets

  • Interest in mountain biking and trail riding
  • Experience using hand tools (shovels, McLeods, pulaskis)
  • Previous outdoor labour or volunteer experience
  • Familiarity with local trail networks
  • Valid Drivers License
